As part of credit
offerings, Stark State has a Transfer Module, which is comprised of
up to 37-39 semester hours of courses, which transfer to all
state-supported colleges and universities in Ohio. In addition, the
College has a number of articulation agreements with universities
and colleges in Ohio which enable students to smoothly move from
associate degree programs into baccalaureate degree programs.
The College also
offers certificates of competency for those who do not seek an
associates degree, but want to develop specific skills and improve
their proficiency in the following knowledge areas. For more
information, visit
www.starkstate.edu/competency.
The College plays a key
role in the economic development of the community by offering
continuing education classes and customized contract training
services to companies and employees in the region. Stark States
Advanced Technology Center (ATC) is the focal point of this
activity, housing continuing education classes and seminars,
customized contract training services, technical and industrial
training programs and business support services. The ATC is shared
with Diebold, Incorporated, a world leader in financial self-service
transaction systems and security products. Diebold utilizes the
second floor of the facility as its Education Center for customers,
distributors and employees worldwide.
Stark State is
located in northern Stark County adjacent to Interstate 77,
conveniently located for students from Stark, Carroll, Columbiana, Holmes,
Medina, Portage, Summit, Tuscarawas and Wayne Counties. Off-campus
sites include the Automotive Technology Center at 5600 Whipple Ave.
N.W., Canton and satellite centers in Alliance, Carrollton, Downtown
Canton, Navarre, Uniontown/Hartville, and at R.G. Drage.
The Colleges Dental
Hygiene Clinic provides dental hygiene services to the community at
reduced rates by students-in-training under the expert supervision
of dentists/faculty members.
And massage therapy students frequently are seen at community events
and activities providing
free chair massages to the public as a community service and as
training for students.
Several new
state-of-the-art buildings have opened in recent years to
accommodate Stark States rapid growth. The W.R. Timken Center for
Information Technology houses the information technology and
engineering technology majors. The Ralph Regula Wellness and Therapy
Center is an educational center for students studying physical
therapy assisting and occupational therapy assisting. One of the newest
buildings is the Automotive Technology Center, located off-campus at
5600 Whipple Ave. N.W., a 40,000 square-foot facility housing the
automotive technology programs and vehicles used to train for those
programs. The Stark State College Fuel Cell Prototyping Center was completed
in the Fall of 2006. This Center
positions Stark State as a leader to support the research,
development and commercialization of fuel cells.
Because Stark State
is committed to access to higher education, we keep tuition at the
lowest per credit hour in Stark County. For this reason as well as
the quality and relevance of its programs, the College serves as the
primary entry point into higher education for many economically and
socially disadvantaged people in the region. Stark State also is the
primary choice of many working adults who need to upgrade their
skills for career changes or occupational advancement. Growing
numbers of recent high school graduates also are enrolling at the
College.
The average Stark
State student fits the profile of the typical two-year college
student in the nation: 59% of SSCT students are female; 57% attend college part time; 76%
work while attending college; and 62% are the first generation in their families
to attend college. The average age of Stark States students is 27.
The number of minority students at SSCT has grown in recent years
and today represents 15% of total enrollment higher than
minority representation in Stark County.
The College has
approximately 122 full-time faculty and, during peak enrollment,
more than 270 adjunct faculty. More than 60% of the Colleges
full-time faculty have masters degrees and 9% have
doctorate degrees. The fact that many faculty are hired with
extensive expertise in their fields strengthens the College
curriculum and provides students greater opportunity for real
world application of both technical and general knowledge in their
majors.
The College also
operates with an extensive advisory committee system. Some 300
individuals representing more than 170 companies and organizations,
serve the College in an advisory capacity on more than 32 committees
that support academic programs and student services.
Since 1960, Stark
State College of Technology has enhanced the economic development of
the local and world communities by preparing well-educated,
technically proficient college graduates for the workplace.
